Have you ever been somewhere that looked like a postcard from a faraway tropical paradise? I hadn’t. That is, I hadn’t until I arrived at Excellence Playa Mujeres, Mexico.
In dire need of a break owing to a big promotion at work and having tackled a whole host of stressful life changing events, I booked my fortnight trip to Excellence Paya Mujeres via Thomson – I figured a few weeks away in the sunshine was just what I needed. Having previously treated myself to a week in Dubai, I opted for Mexico and Excellence Playa Mujeres based on the endless photos of golden sandy beaches, all-inclusive luxury and the promise of lots of sunshine. Oh, and the cocktails. Definitely lots and lots of cocktails.
Arrival at Excellence Playa Mujeres
Arriving at Cancun International Airport after a comfortable flight on the new Thomson Dreamliner, we were greeted at the airport by our private chauffeur and transferred to the Excellence resort, a twenty minute or so drive from the airport.
First impressions of Excellence Playa Mujeres, as we sped up to the grand gateway at the front of the property, were encouraging; it was evident we’d booked an extremely exclusive and secure resort, with our driver navigating through two security checkpoints as we made our way into the Excellence Playa Mujeres property and up the vast driveway towards the lobby.
From the word go as we pulled up at the front door, it was clear we were to be treated like rockstars for the next fortnight; our bags were on their way to our room before we had completed our complimentary glass of bubbly or had enjoyed the refreshing hot towel handed to us by a welcome party as we stepped out of the car. Walking up the marble staircase into the main lobby, we were greeted by the front desk team who greeted us by name and swiftly checked us in, before arranging for a golf-buggy to take us immediately to our room. Fast, efficient and welcoming. Wow!
After settling into our room (more on that shortly), we decided to explore the grand resort, including its nine(!) restaurants, stretch of golden sandy private beach, health spa and impressive lazy river which weaves it’s way around the resort. Many lazy days soaking up the hot Mexican sunshine over a cool cocktail would follow. It was hard work!
As the next couple of photos reveal, Excellence Playa Mujeres is an utterly beautiful and impeccably clean resort…
For the more active, Excellence Playa Mujeres offers a whole host of amenities, classes and activities; jet-skis, parasailing (which I did and thoroughly enjoyed), volley ball, cooking lessons, daytime poolside games and evening shows – you name it, the resort has it. Ok, so they probably don’t have killer-dancing-robots, but they had everything else.
Excellence Playa Mujeres Two-Story Rooftop Terrace with Pool
Ok, I’ll admit, this ended up being pretty special and was absolutely worth the upgrade.
I stayed in an Excellence Playa Mujeres two-story rooftop terrace with pool room, spanning (as the name suggests..) two-stories of luxuriousness overlooking the resort out to the ocean, featuring its own private plunge pool. Be under no illusion that this was as every bit as magical as it sounds!
The room featuring all the usual amenities (safe, large flatscreen television, air conditioning, wireless speakers) plus:
- Double-story room with private plunge pool and lounger on the roof.
- King-size four poster bed.
- Full marble bathroom with his & hers sink.
- Indoor whirlpool.
- Luxury bathrobes and slippers.
- Free wireless internet.
- Well-stocked mini bar, with beer, wine, spirits, soft-drinks and snacks.
- Daily turndown service and pillow menu.
On top of that, it had the most stunning view at sunset…
The room was immaculate and remained that way over the course of our stay, housekeeping doing a great job of replenishing the mini-bar and leaving the room fresh every day for us. It was certainly rather novel having a balcony with daybed coupled with a private rooftop plunge pool – the latter certainly saw a lot of use early evening before heading out to the resort’s many bars and restaurants. Most impressive. I felt like Diddy of Puff Daddy / P. Diddy / Puffy / P-izzle / Sean Coombs fame, for sure.
Excellence Playa Mujeres Restaurants & Food
One of the resort’s trump cards is its food, with nine restaurants serving gourmet worldwide cuisine; as a food-lover, I was particularly keen on trying all of the options and am pleased to report that Excellence Playa Mujeres is superb if judged by its food offer. From the delicious Pad Thai at Spice, fresh lobster (yes, lobster at an all-inclusive..!) at the Lobster House or perhaps more traditional Mexican cuisine, the resort had something to cater for all tastes and, rather impressively, allergies/intolerances. We also made use of the new coffee shop above the lobby between meals, enjoying the fresh pastries, ice-cream, coffee, smoothies and milkshakes all made to order… and you guessed it, all-inclusive. Going hungry was not an option.
For me, the jewel in the crown at Excellence Playa Mujeres was the French restaurant, Chez Isabelle; the service, wine and ingredients/menu combination here was extraordinary for an all-inclusive resort, equal to some very high-end fine dining restaurants I’ve had the pleasure of eating in. Twice I tucked into beautifully presented escargot and a gorgeous steak with asparagus tips, which paired with a most excellent wine (even the house wine was good), really made for a superb meal. The Grill, overlooking the pool and beach, made an excellent lunchtime visit, including the delightful seafood tacos!
The Italian restaurant, Toscana, was a little bland for my taste and sadly didn’t quite live up to the calibre set by the other eight restaurants on offer, a consensus shared by many guests at the resort who I spoke to – but it isn’t a showstopper with so many other great options on offer.
It goes without saying that the many, many cocktails sampled were all rather delightful, wherever they were produced by the pool or on the beach during the day, or in one of the restaurants or open air entertainment areas late into the night; there was certainly no shortage of premium branded alcohol!
One of the main highlights, outside of the gourmet experience, was the twenty-four hour all-inclusive room service; the novelty of having our own breakfast, made to order and laid out for us on our private balcony certainly never wore off. More rockstar service for sure.
What makes Excellence Playa Mujeres so special?
The best thing about Excellence Playa Mujeres isn’t the endless supply of gourmet food and drink, luxurious double-story rooms with private plunge pools or its golden sandy beaches with round the clock glorious sunshine… no my friends, by a country-mile, it’s the staff.
Everybody from the front desk, to housekeeping, waiters and bar staff are what make the resort standout, not just from other all-inclusive resorts, but without question from some of the best hotels around the world that I’ve had the privilege to stay in. Nothing was ever too much trouble and I genuinely felt like I’d been treated like royalty for the duration of my stay. I simply couldn’t have asked for more personable or attentive service.
Excellence Playa Mujeres, Mexico: Review Verdict
I have to admit, it was rather devastating departing Excellence Playa Mujeres after a fortnight of maximum relaxation. Sun, sea and plenty of cocktails, mixed-in with gorgeous gourmet food and fantastic personable service, firmly places Excellence Playa Mujeres squarely as the best resort I have ever had the pleasure of visiting. It is simply heaven on earth.
Whether you’re on a blinder of a celebration (honeymoon, wedding anniversary…. heck, even a Bar Mitzvah) or in need of some deep relaxation, Excellence Playa Mujeres is definitely the place to be. I already miss the resort and would definitely want to return in the very near future.
Relax, unwind, eat, drink and enjoy! Adios!
