The Crooked Billet has been popping up on my radar a lot recently. Not only did they win best pub in Milton Keynes for the second year running at the MK Food Awards earlier this year, but they also held a beer festival back in May that the Family P made an appearance at and which, despite the brief rain interlude, still seemed to be very popular. But we have never eaten there and so when they mentioned a pudding club, Mrs P spotted an opportunity to combine Date Night, with Mrs P Eats a Lot of Pudding Night. A win/win situation if ever she saw one.
The Embankment sits, as the name suggests, on the bank of the river Ouse in Bedford. The family P stopped in a week ago and found ourselves wondering what could be better than strolling along the river on a gloriously sunny day, pausing only to enjoy a drink at a pub overlooking some of the nicer parts of Bedford*? How lucky then when the aforementioned pub is selling lobster in garlic butter! Mmmmmm, how could we go wrong? We all know that everything’s better with butter.
I’m a big fan of the city break. Whilst I’m partial to a bit of sun, glorious white sandy beaches and cocktails in a tropical paradise, European cities make for a lovely (and affordable!) short stay. I’m not sure whether it’s experiencing the differences in culture, language, entertainment or food separated by just a couple of hundred miles across the continent, but I’ve had fabulous stays in cities such as Budapest, Berlin and Barcelona. All of them have been pleasantly memorable and beautifully eccentric in their own ways after peeling back the touristy-veneer.
In case you hadn’t noticed, it’s pretty warm this week and it’s also the last bank holiday of the Summer. So do yourself a favour, get out of the house and enjoy a Beer/Cider/Alcopop/Social Beverage of your choice in one (or more) of the best Milton Keynes beer gardens you can find. As self-confirmed Men About Town, Gent and I have scoured the local area for the best examples for you to rest up and make the most of what will inevitably become your last chance to see the sun for another 10 months. You. Are. Welcome.
Therefore, in no particular order, we bring you the very best beer garden action in and around Milton Keynes.
Now, isn’t this just the strangest post you ever thought you would see here? I still can’t believe it myself. Dancys is the sort of Fashion brand that puts the hip into Hipster and does it in all it’s massive bearded, skinny jeaned glory. So why on Earth are they talking to us? The truth is, that while Suburban Gent and I like to believe that we have a certain classic suited, shiny oxford wearing and clipped haircut sporting kind of style, Fashionistas or trend setters we are not (edit from SG: speak for yourself, Rob!). Dancys clearly had our number then because when looking through their growing range of high fashion ties (in both standard and bow variety) or ‘pocket squares’ (hankerchiefs to you and me), they decided to send us some… socks.
Wow – what a crazy four months it’s been!
From our opening posts including RobRibs’s musings about why he loves Spotify and my top tips for visiting Dubai, we’ve had nothing short of a blast sharing our travel and lifestyle posts… and of course, not forgetting our many, many food posts. Most recently we’ve really found our feet in supporting local independent food traders and have had much enjoyment expanding our waistlines with the very best, and perhaps less than great, grub (and plenty of drink to wash that down) that Milton Keynes has to offer.
You can imagine our surprise and delight then in receiving a lovely email Monday morning informing us that Two Men About Town is a finalist in the upcoming MK Digital Awards in the ‘Blog – Entertainment’ category. Woohoo!
I am not ashamed to admit that I am a bit of a travel snob, with a huge taste for the finer things in life; so much so that my idea of ‘roughing it’ during a round-the-world trip was a Hilton on Waikiki Beach(!). For real. Whether I’m travelling abroad to destinations such as Dubai, Mexico or a little closer to home, I’m all about the luxury.. well, as much as my wallet will realistically allow.
So you can therefore imagine my desire to find a comfortable and luxurious boutique hotel in North Cornwall for a recent short visit to Bude – did I find this in The Beach at Bude?
Wolverton in Milton Keynes is seemingly becoming the jewel in the crown of the MK independent food-scene; whether it’s Japanese kitchen Akasaka, the new Turkish Antep Kitchen, Murati’s Pizzeria or street-foodies UrbanGrilla or Taco Shack (but to name a few), there are plenty of tantilising culinary delights available to residents of West Milton Keynes.
Despite all of this growth, there remained a real gap in regards to a strong weekend home-delivered breakfast offering, which up until a matter of five weeks ago remained (largely) unfulfilled. But that, as you might have guessed, has just changed. Founded by a husband and wife team who wanted to have a crack at fulfilling this demand, Wrap it and Run was born.We have ourselves a revolution people.
I probably shouldn’t give the game away before you read down to the end of this review, but I just can’t help myself because yes. Yes it is. And if you care to join me for the next few minutes of your life as you read this article, I’m going to explain why.
