2016 was a great year for us at Two Men About Town – we launched our little blog with much excitement back in May this year, and things have gone from strength to strength, including being recognised as a finalist in the MK Digital Awards in October.
We’ve had a blast (and on more than one occasion, got rather ‘merry’…) putting together our posts this year and can’t wait to crack on with 2017, but before we do, we thought we would produce a round-up of some of our favourite (and fleeting references to our not-so-favourite) things from this year, so sit back, relax… and enjoy 🙂
We ate… a lot!
From Michelin-star dining at Paris House and The Hand and Flowers to enjoying a curry at The Don, going for grub at the Bang Bang Canteen in Fitzrovia, grabbing an Honest Burger, a pizza or two in London’s Franco Manca or MK’s very own Affamato takeaway, or washing it down with some tapas and cocktails at Revolucion de Cuba… we’ve tucked into a real variety of food and drink this year.
Once our waistlines have recovered from the onslaught of Christmas, we will be back on it very shortly in the New Year with a new wave of food and drink reviews from our favourite spots in Milton Keynes and London.
We went a bit pub crazy!
I say ‘we’…. RobsRibs went a bit pub crazy. And by pub crazy, I mean pub crazy, no fewer than ten reviews in a couple of months of his favourite, and not-so-favourite, pubs in and around Milton Keynes. Standouts included the Black Horse in Woburn, The Swan at Salford, The Crooked Billet and The Maytime Inn in Asthall. Although we didn’t blog about it, we had several positive visits to The Navigation in Cosgrove also.
Most importantly though, we published our guide to the top 10 beer gardens in Milton Keynes which will come in handy as late Spring and Summer 2017 roll around!
We found some great new spots in London!
In October we attended the launch of Asian-inspired Yuu Kitchen in Aldgate; after eating our bodyweight in delicious Bao buns (whilst making a nuisance of ourselves collaring every fresh plate out of the kitchen for a sample), we concluded that it was a great new addition to the London food scene, relaxed, affordable and tasty.
Talking about cool and trendy hotspots, in December we popped along to Ember in London’s Pudding Lane, a new premium and beautifully decorated underground bar, serving a fine selection of whiskeys and cocktails, not to mention a tasty selection of Pan-Asian inspired small plates to keep you enjoying your visit into the small hours.
We had the ultimate night in!
The good folks at City Stay Apartments invited us to review their apartments back in November, an alternative for the young professional or couple in Milton Keynes to the mundane and blandness of a Travelodge or Holiday Inn. We were blown away at the quality of the two-bedroom apartment that we were fortunate to stay in, impressed by the value-for-money and comfort.
This of course gave us the perfect opportunity to host our ultimate night in, which saw much tomfoolery (mainly whiskey-based), very much supported by a good curry from our friends at The Mastee and entertainment in the form of Cards Against Humanity.
We had a few pleasant surprises!
One thing is for certain this year – we found some (no longer quite so hidden) gems this year, whether it be Murati’s Pizzeria at the Wolverton hand car wash, the Antep Kitchen, Taco Shack, local grub at the MK Feast (namely Sizzlers who produced us a gorgeous burger) or independent coffee shop Heavenly Blends.
However, our favourite find this year has been Wrap It and Run, a husband and wife team local to Wolverton (Milton Keynes) running a home-delivery breakfast business. Not only did they kindly cater for our ultimate night in, but have satisfied our hunger on many a Sunday morning with their *DELICIOUS* breakfast wraps. Still can’t get enough.
We had a few not-so -pleasant surprises!
It wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows, unfortunately. Regular visitors to our blog may not forget the rather disparaging visit to Kua’Ania on Goodge Street which concluded that “a slap in the face would have probably felt better value for money”; we also had a pretty disappointing experience at Chimichanga Milton Keynes which left both RobsRibs and I pretty miffed, to say the least.
We branched out into male fashion and grooming!
It’s no real secret that Two Men About Town is first and foremost a food and drink based blog, but we got ourselves up in the grill of the male fashion and grooming industry too! We’ve shared top tips on grooming, dressing for success, whilst giving some brands such as Dancys, the Philips OneBlade and The Bluebeard’s Revenge a whirl. We will be back in 2017 with even more fashion and grooming content, so keep an eye out!
We travelled to some cool places!
Wowzers, we had some awesome trips this year on the blog as we launched the travel blog category to Two Men About Town.
We kicked things off to quite possibly the most glamorous destination in the world, Dubai, soaking up the sun, sights and (plenty of) champagne whilst taking in the culture, tradition and lavish excess of the UAE playground. RobsRibs also shared a recent trip to Canada with some pretty spectacular photos and we had serious holiday blues reflecting on a trip to Excellence Playa Mujeres, Mexico.
… and we had a blast!
There were a few bits that didn’t really fit into the above that we very much enjoyed sharing, such as my disastrous attempt to see Coldplay at Wembley, a trip to the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, a review of the Sonos Play:1 and a home-cooked curry courtesy of the folks at Tyga and Kingfisher for National Curry Week…
So there we have it; that just about rounds off our highlights of 2016, but we would very much like to thank you for visiting our little part of the interwebs and hope to welcome you back in 2017; we have some really exciting posts in the pipeline that we can’t wait to share with you.
May 2017 bring you all much happiness and success!
