Where are the best places to eat or drink in and around Milton Keynes?

Paris House's new 'blue' look

Spring 2018

‘Milton Keynes is full of chains’ they say. ‘There is nowhere good to eat!’ they say. Well, I say that it sucks to be them because while it’s true that there is an unfortunate glut of horrible, horrific and unnecessary chain restaurants here you just have to look a bit harder and you’ll find so many amazing people who are pulling out all the stops to get you the dinner you deserve. This is my list of the best independent options you’ve got in and around the area, these are places that I go to regularly and have rarely been disappointed at. If you don’t want to give your money to Chimichangas or any other cut and paste restaurant (and I wouldn’t blame you) then take a good look at some of these and join me in sticking it to the Man.

The Bacon Cheeseburger… Donut?

It’s no secret that I am a big fan of a good burger; Honest Burger, Dip & Flip, Patty&Bun, Burger & Lobster, MEATliquor, Prime Burger and even the occasional Five Guys all get my business when I’m out on the hunt for a mouthwatering burger. A seeded-bun or soft brioche, a good cheese and a thick and juicy beefy patty is an award-winning combination, so generally speaking, it really upsets me when this tried and tested formula of absolute life-winning substance is messed with (of course the Bagel Burger being a major exception to this rule).

I was frankly AGHAST to hear that Maxwell Bar & Grill in Covent Garden was potentially creating a huge crime against food – a culinary Frankenstein, if you will – by merging two (arguably) superfoods – the humble bacon cheeseburger and the doughnut. I really wasn’t sure what to make of it.

The Bagel Burger from The London Bagel Co. – is this the start of a burger revolution?

The London Bagel Co. - The Fat Bastard

At TwoMenAboutTown, it’s no secret that we like burgers. We hit some of the hottest chains last year and both Honest Burger and  Smashburger faired pretty well but special mention goes out to local boys Sizzlers whom we first sampled at the MK Feast with their epic hunger destroying buns of deliciousness. However, it’s not always good news and if you hadn’t noticed, we like burgers so much that we get really annoyed when people like Kua’Ania mess them up. For shame.

So when the guys over at the London Bagel Co. promised to show us the future of the burger as we know it, how could we refuse taking a look?

Kua’Aina, Goodge Street London Review; A taste of Hawaiian paradise?

v

I’ve written time and time again about London’s Fitzrovia neighbourhood, blessed with hundreds of great restaurants, cafes, cocktail bars, bakeries and bistros; bigger players such as Bang Bang Canteen, Wahaca, Dim t, Franco Manca and countless great little indies means that this part of London is bursting at the seams for lunchtime retreats. It’s my favourite part of London.

Today’s trip between meetings was to Kua’Ania on Goodge Street, an Americana-inspired (well, Hawaiian) cafe with beach shack-style decor; the chilled-out vibe, menu full of meaty classics and tasty looking shakes/cocktails is right up my street, so I’d been looking forward to this one for a while…

Honest Burger, Tottenham Court Road, London: An Honest Review

Cheeseburger and rosemary fries at Honest Burger

I love a good burger. In fact, it’s a great time to be a fan of the American fast food icon carnivore, with entrants like Byron, Gourmet Burger Kitchen, Five Guys, Smashburger and London-centric establishments such as MEATLiquor and Patty & Bun roaring onto the fast-food-come-gourmet scene. There is now no-end of high-end restaurants to indulge in a gourmet burger, especially in London, and frankly I’m rather happy about this.

So when the good people of Honest Burger announced a new opening on Tottenham Court Road, just a stones-throw from my office in Central London, you can imagine my delight and excitement. I assure you it was akin to a puppy at Christmas.

HULK SMASH! Half a review of Smashburger, Milton Keynes

Smashburger Milton Keynes review

Since I first mentioned the phenomenon in August last year, for good or for ill, I have accepted more than a few invitations to sample various dishes and visit restaurants but I’ve continued what seems to be my favourite habit of not being invited to any burger chain store launches. Clearly not wanting to buck the trend, Smashburger opened it’s first UK store right here in Milton Keynes and I didn’t go. While waiting for the opportunity to get in there, I waited to see what the other Milton Keynes twitteratti made of the big event and the result was a somewhat underwhelming silence…. now I know we are not yet a culinary force to be reckoned with but there are enough of us about that I would have thought that someone would have gone to tell us what they thought.
